This book has a number of themes and the strongest on to me is hope. I am awed by the human alchemy of hope - how the merest amount contains power beyond all calculations. At the same time, some hopes are doomed. Thus the title of this book, in which the two sides of the great pillar of hope are touched back and forth to seek its shape, like a blind man at a Roman temple.

Two other themes are also addressed. One is interspecies violence - the violence humans do toward other humans. Can this paradoxically have survival value? The remaining theme is my relationship with a literary character I have created: Madame, a personification of the creative forces of nature. In my heart and my hopes, Madame is our worldly balance wheel.
