Living
in the foothills of the Umpqua National Forest, between the
North Umpqua River and miles of BLM land, the outdoors and
I are in constant communion. I have come to see a fundamental
connection between me, my species and the life forces that
surround me.
In that
spirit I have created a poetic persona, named Madame, who
is a personification of the forces of nature. That is the
backdrop for the poems in Songs of the Umpqua, poems
about moments and events in nature that are at once ordinary
and nurturing. The Umpqua area breeds hope through its basic
life-affirming character, and these poems are attempts to
capture such moments and to sing my thanks.
